Women in Leadership Event
On Wednesday 17 October, a group of Year 11 students travelled to Newscorp’s headquarters in Surry Hills to attend a panel discussion organised by The Australian on the topic of Women in Leadership. The panel was comprised of three women in senior leadership positions – Kathryn Fogg (Chief Executive for Women), Sally Loane (CEO of Financial Services Council) and Gabby Costigan (CEO of BAE Systems). The women shared their stories and journeys in the field of business. It was interesting to note that all women when leaving school and moving into further study did not initially intend to have a career in business, instead they studied engineering and journalism.
The panellists also had an array of advice to share with us which they had learnt over the years. All of this advice will be extremely helpful as we look towards transitioning into our HSC year and into our future lives. All of the panellists stressed the importance of being resilient and being able to bounce back from setbacks and failures- they described this as “getting back on the horse.” For girls in particular we have this fixation on the ideal of being perfect which is exacerbated by the new age of social media. This fixation can sometimes prevent us from taking risks as this can lead to failure and mistakes. It was really interesting that the panellists did not shy away from this topic, instead they imparted some valuable advice, commenting on the importance of making mistakes and having confidence in our own ability – “don’t be afraid to make mistakes” and learn on the job, “fake it till you make it”.
We are extremely thankful for the opportunity to speak to and hear the stories of these amazing and influential women.
