Women in sport
You may have already had a chance to read my article in this week’s newsletter – in it, I wrote about the steps women have already taken towards equality in sport, whilst acknowledging the journey ahead. I can’t stress enough how important it is to support women’s sport at all levels, from providing opportunities for your daughters to participate in a range of physical activity, right through to supporting elite and professional athletes who are paving the way for future superstars by getting out to the stadiums and arenas. A great place to start is North Sydney Oval this weekend, as the inaugural day-night test takes place between the Southern Stars and their English counterparts. Pop down after school and work tonight and help support the continued push for equality in Australian Sport!
Normo Regatta
What a big weekend of rowing we enjoyed with Loreto Normanhurst once again hosting the traditional opening Schoolgirl Regatta of the season on Saturday, followed by the Loreto Kirribilli regatta on Sunday. It was an amazing chance to showcase Loreto Normanhurst Rowing and fortunately the rain stayed away just long enough on Saturday for the regatta to be completed. I would like to thank all the parents and supporters who came along and volunteered their time to make the regatta such an enjoyable experience. Thanks too to our wonderful coaching staff who had the shed running like a well-oiled machine. Congratulations to the squad, who came 2nd overall at the Normo regatta and backed it up the next day with a 3rd place finish in the Kirribilli regatta.
Cheerleading
Our cheer girls were back in action on Sunday at the annual Battle of the Beaches competition. Unfortunately, the weather meant the event needed to be held in Warriewood as opposed to the fantastic backdrop of Manly Beach, but that didn’t worry the cheer squad at all as they performed magnificently to take out 2nd place in their division – well done girls!
Netball
Congratulations to Charli Fidler (Year 8) and Isabelle Barker (Year 9) who have been selected into the 2017 Indoor Netball NSW State Team, which will be competing at the 2017 Indoor Netball Federation of Australia Junior Nationals in Brisbane later this month. Congratulations to both girls and we wish them the best of luck!
Equestrian
Congratulations to Felicity Orman (Year 7) who has achieved some fantastic results at the 2017 ISHE:
14 years
1st place. Hack
1st place. Pairs
2nd Place Girl Rider
3rd place Pleasure hack
4th place Bareback
Felicity also placed in the top 20 of 74 competitors in four sporting events and has qualified to ride at both the Sydney and Canberra Royal Competitions.
Loreto Sports Girl Profile: Lillian Dean
Current sport/activity: Rowing and Tennis
Favourite school sport/activity: I love all my sports, my favourite three are rowing, tennis and netball. If I had to choose one I think it would be rowing because of the fun, the challenge and the discipline.
Highest level of sporting achievement: I don’t have one amazing achievement but the achievements I’m most proud of are being the junior champion in Wagga Wagga athletics, representing the Wagga Wagga diocese in touch footy, tennis and netball as well as making the 1st team for rowing, netball and tennis here at Loreto.
Best moment of Loreto Sport for you: When I completed my first rowing season at the start of this year, even though we didn’t get a medal at head of river we all worked so hard and it was such a great day and season.
Favourite sporting moment as a spectator: My favourite moments as a spectator is whenever I’m watching my friends play sports and cheering them on over the finish line or till the buzzer goes.
Best subject at school: I really enjoy PDHPE practical lessons and learning about the theory behind sport and I also enjoy Maths.
Any superstitions before playing sport: Before I take part in any sporting activity competitively I always have to high-five someone.
Best tune to listen to before competing: ‘Hall of Fame’ by The Script and will.i.am
