Weekend Update

Good luck to all students who are competing in their last weekend of Term 2 Saturday Sport this weekend – IGSA Football, IGSA Basketball, IPSHA Hockey and IPSHA Netball. We have seen some incredible team performances over the course of the term and hope you have all enjoyed the season of sport!

Secondary School Athletics Carnival

Monday 31st of May saw our first Secondary Athletics Carnival since 2019. It was evident from the beginning that our students had brought enough colour, enthusiasm and spirit to fill two years of carnivals as we recorded our highest ever participation numbers in recent memory. There was barely a dull moment throughout the day, as students were getting involved in every race and every event.

Congratulations to the following girls:

NSW All Schools Swimming & Diving

Our Loreto Normanhurst students representing NSW CIS had a very successful day of racing last Friday at the NSW All Schools Championships. This is the pinnacle of school sport swimming, with the best swimmers from every school across the state selected to compete.

Loreto Normanhurst had 9 swimmers competing, the most in the school’s history for this competition.

In the multi-class events, Maddison Hinds (Year 10) brought home a swag of medals, 7 to be exact, highlighted by her wins in the Girls 16 & Over 50m Free and 50m Butterfly events. She also won Silver medals in the 50m Breast, 50m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke events, and Bronze medals in the 100m Free and 4x50m Free Relay multi class.

Loreto’s other gold medal came in the ultra-competitive Senior Girls 4x50m Medley Relay, where Loreto went stroke for stroke with Pymble, and ultimately won the Gold medal by just 0.60 of a second. Abby Feurtado (Year 12), Kate Law-Whitting (Year 12) and Tilly King (Year 11) were joined by Cordelia Stephen (Year 10), who was swimming up three age groups to fill in for Abbey Williamson who was sick on the day. This was a great reward for these girls, many of whom are in Year 12 and have been competing against Pymble for the last 6 years, to finally beat them in a relay in what I believe is the first time in the school’s history.

The Senior Girls 4x50m Freestyle Relay team swam extremely well again to win the Bronze medal. The team was made up of Meghan Andren (Year 11), Kate Law-Whitting (Year 12), Abby Feurtado (Year 12) and Tilly King (Year 11).

Tilly King also swam outstandingly in her individual events on the day, winning three Silver medals in the Girls 15-16 years 50, 100m and 200m Breaststroke events.

Cordelia Stephen (Year 10) won Bronze in the 15 years 50m Backstroke, and was also 8th in the 100m Backstroke final.

Also placing top 10 in their individual events were: Kate Law-Whitting (Year 12) (5th 17&O 400m Free), Regan Garufi (Year 8) (8th 12-14 years 200m Fly) and Hayley Kable (Year 11) (8th 15-16 years 200m Backstroke).

Finally, congratulations to Lily Whalan (Year 7) who was our only Competitive Diver and who came 6th in the Under 13 Springboard. A fantastic effort!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

Congratulations to Emma Flaherty (Year 12) who has been granted her Gold Award. Emma has shown her perseverance and initiative in order to complete the rigorous requirements of the Gold Award. Well done Emma on this fantastic achievement!

Well done to the 112 Year 9 students who completed their practice canoeing journey for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award last month. The practice journey is an important learning experience which will prepare the girls for their qualifying journey in August.

We’re thrilled on behalf of the LN alumnae who recently achieved their Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award. Congratulations to Ashleigh, Luka, Gian, Bianca, Caitlin, Catherine, Lihara, Julia, Akshara, Sian and Jie Yi for this considerable achievement, which saw them learn new skills, push their limits, build and give back to their community. We were delighted to see some of them at last week’s ceremony, presented by her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW. Well done to you all!

Students currently engaged in Duke of Edinburgh’s Award may wish to attend our Duke Drop In sessions – we’ll be holding drop-in sessions for students to come down and ask any questions or get any guidance they may need. Each Friday, in the first half of lunchtime, the School’s Duke of Ed Award Leaders will be available to provide all the assistance needed to smoothly work your way through the Award.

NSW All Schools 15&U AFL Championships

Congratulations to Skye Halmarick (Year 8) who was a member of the NSWCIS AFL team that came runners up at the NSW All Schools 15&U AFL Championships last week. Skye was also named into the NSW Merit Team at the end of the tournament. Huge achievement Skye, well done!

Congratulations to Annie Goodall (Year 6) and Fleur Manion (Year 6) who were selected into the Primary Girls CIS Rugby 7’s Team. At the time of print, Tessa Young (Year 5) was trialing for the NSWCIS Primary Touch Football Team. We wish her the best of the luck at these trials and will have an update on whether she was selected into the team in the following newsletter.

Loreto Sports Girl: Lara Wheelhouse, Year 9

Current sport/activity: My current sport and activities that I do are soccer, hockey (Mollie Dive) and hockey coaching for the Year 6 team.

Favourite school sport/activity: I love to do all my sports, especially Mollie Dive Hockey, but I would have to say hockey coaching is one of my favourites.

Highest level of sporting achievement: Being able to coach Hockey for the Year 6’s as I have never done it before and it is really fun.

Best moment of Loreto Sport for you: One of my best moments of sport for me is in soccer, as I had never played before so when first started I didn’t know how to play. For me it was being about how to tackle the ball and keep getting it off the other team.

Favourite sporting moment as a spectator: One of my favourite sporting moments as a spectator was when I was watching my Year 6 team in their first game get 6 goals. Most of them had never played hockey before so that was really fun. And then after that, going to watch my friends play basketball and see how much they love it.

Best subject at school: One of my best subjects at school I would say is PDHPE, as we are now doing our Bronze Medallion and it is so much fun doing the pracs for CPR in class.

Any superstitions before playing sport: One superstition I have before playing sport is that you need to be in a good mood, excited to see how it goes and to just know that if you try your best you will get there.

Best tune to listen to before competing: I don’t have a favourite song to listen to but I would say pump-up music, as it gets you in the mood with friends to win.

Correct Sport Uniform

An important note regarding correct sport uniform for Saturday competition sport.

Students who are not dressed in the correct uniform for competition will NOT be allowed to play. In the case that no Loreto Sport Staff member is present, your team coach will have the authority to remove a student from play and/or not allow a student to start play. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. It is our expectation that you will be appropriately dressed and in uniform while representing Loreto Normanhurst.

We love to see photos of our students getting physically active and staying engaged in sport. Please send through any photos or videos to
