LN Sport Wrap

Welcome back to our students – I hope you’ve all had a restful and refreshing Easter break and are looking forward to getting stuck back into Term 2 Sport.

I can’t wait for our IGSA Basketball and IGSA Football teams to get going on Saturday, along with our Hills Netballers down at Pennant Hills Park. We’ve also got IPSHA Netballers and IPSHA Hockey/Minkey players starting this weekend, with students also involved in Mollie Dive Hockey and Cheerleading.

This term we’ve got some big events coming up, including the IGSA Cross Country Carnival, the School Secondary and Primary Athletics Carnivals, Coonabarabran Equestrian Expo, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze Adventurous Journey and so much more!

IGSSA → IGSA Sport

No, it’s not a typo – there’s been an update to the way we’ll refer to some of our Secondary Sports. The Association of Heads of Independent Girls Schools (AHIGS) has updated their name to Independent Girls’ Schools Association (IGSA), which means that their sporting program will now be referred to as IGSA Sport.

What does this mean for our students and families? Not very much at all – this is a branding change only and will not affect the programs themselves. We will continue to refer to our sporting programs as IGSA Sports, and you can expect the same high-quality, enjoyable sporting offerings we provide at Loreto Normanhurst. We are currently discerning the responses from the survey earlier in the year regarding potential structural changes to our IGSA Sport offerings, and I look forward to sharing those with you soon.

Swimming & Diving

We had a record-breaking day at the IGSA Swim & Dive Carnival at the end of Term 1, with the LN Swim & Dive team finishing 3rd overall and recording the best finish for a LN Swim & Dive team ever! The squad, led by Swim & Dive Captain Georgia Robertson (Year 12), swum so well, competing for every place in every race. Some highlights were Maddison Hinds (Year 10) winning all four strokes in the 50m MC division and retaining the Annabelle Williams Shield, Tilly King (Year 11) bringing home a gold medal and Lily Whalan (Year 7) finishing 4th in the U13 Years Springboard.

Further congratulations to the following girls who qualified to compete for IGSA at the NSW CIS Championships next week:

  • Meghan Andren (Year 11)
  • Abby Feurtado (Year 12)
  • Regan Garufi (Year 18)
  • Maddison Hinds (Year 10)
  • Hayley Kable (Year 11)
  • Tilly King (Year 11)
  • Kate Law-Whitting (Year 12)
  • Cordelia Stephen (Year 10)
  • Abbey Williamson (Year 12)
  • Lily Whalan (Year 7)

Over the break, we had a number of swimmers in action at the National Age Swimming Championships, with Maddison Hinds, Cordelia Stephen, Tilly King, Regan Garufi, Kate Law-Whitting and Hayley Kable all competing and putting in some outstanding results. Again, Maddie Hinds had a stellar meet, picking up a haul of medals and PB’s, with the highlight being a gold medal in the 50m MC Butterfly! Well done to all the girls who competed and achieved such incredible results.

Rowing

Congratulations to our 1st VIII crew who capped off an amazing season with a fantastic 7th place overall in the A Final of the Australian Rowing Championships in Tasmania. This was a great achievement for the crew, who also finished a very narrow 2nd in the Schoolgirl Sprint on the Saturday.

A big thanks to Mr Edmunds, Mrs Greville and the coaching staff who looked after the girls throughout the week of Nationals.

We also had some success for Normo girls competing with external clubs – well done to Lily Gavan (Year 12) who won a gold and two bronze medals at the National Championships and has gone on to be selected in the U19 Australian Rowing Team! Way to go, Lily! You can get to know Lily better as she’s our Sportsgirl of the Week – you can also read a Q&A with Lily here.

Primary IPSHA Cross Country

We had 14 girls in action at the IPSHA Cross Country which was held at The King’s School on Wednesday – this event was rescheduled from last term due to the rain. All the girls put in a fantastic effort on a challenging course, and a big congrats to Seren D’Souza (Year 5) who finished 9th overall and has qualified to represent IPSHA at the Primary CIS Cross Country Championships later in the year.

Representative Team Selection News

Well done to Mikayla Paul (Year 9) and Jessica Ingham (Year 9) who have both been selected into the IGSA Netball U/15’s Representative Team!

Well done to Rebecca O’Brien (Year 10) who has been selected into the IGSA Basketball Open Representative Team!

Athletics

More great news during the break as our athletes competed at the Australian Track & Field Championships out at Homebush. Claudia Wilson (Year 10), Elli Barron (Year 10), Sophie Kavanagh (Year 11), Arabella Price (Year 11) and Zara Warland (Year 11) all put in some fantastic efforts. A massive congratulations to Sophie Kavanagh who won silver in the U18’s high jump, clearing 1.68 metres!

Equestrian

Congratulations to our very talented Felicity Orman (Year 11) who competed in three events at the Royal Easter Show and placed in all three!

Felicity and her horse MyWhistler Roco came 3rd in team of 4’s, 3rd in the individual rider event and 2nd in pairs.

Well done, Felicity.

Loreto Sports Girl: Lily Gavan, Year 12

Current sport/activity: Rowing!

Favourite school sport/activity: Swimming and cross country

Highest level of sporting achievement: Getting selected into the Australian Junior Rowing Team.

Best moment of Loreto Sport for you: Deciding to randomly participate in the NSW All Schools Triathlon having done no training and thinking that it was going to be easy. I thought wrong!

Favourite sporting moment as a spectator: I think one of my favourite sporting moments as a spectator would be being able to watch my older brother row and win at the AAGPS Head of the River in 2017.

Best subject at school: Not too sure if they are my best subjects but I really enjoy Community and Family Studies and PDHPE.

Any superstitions before playing sport: Before any regatta, I actually have a very specific ritual which consists of wearing the exact same socks, wearing the same hair style (ponytail with a plait) and wearing what I call my “lucky crop top”. I also only eat one thing on regatta days and that is McDonald’s cookies. If you haven’t tried them, I highly recommend it!

Best tune to listen to before competing: My go-to tunes before competing are actually quite old-school. I often listen to the entire Rocky album on repeat. Some of my faves from the album would have to be No Easy Way Out and Going the Distance.

Correct Sport Uniform

An important note regarding correct sport uniform for Saturday competition sport.

Students who are not dressed in the correct uniform for competition will NOT be allowed to play. In the case that no Loreto Sport Staff member is present, your team coach will have the authority to remove a student from play and/or not allow a student to start play. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. It is our expectation that you will be appropriately dressed and in uniform while representing Loreto Normanhurst.
