It’s been so great to see our teams and squads back in action, and fantastic to have the noise and atmosphere from spectators return to the courts, pool and oval at Loreto Normanhurst.
There have been some outstanding performances in the first couple of weeks, none more so than our Senior 1sts Touch Football team, who took on Abbotsleigh in Week 1 of the IGSSA Touch Competition. Abbotsleigh’s Senior 1sts team had not lost a game for nine seasons(!) but that quickly became history as our squad played some fantastic team touch and were able to come away with a hard-fought 4-2 victory! A massive congrats to our Senior 1sts Touch team!
Big congrats to Ella McKenzie (Year 10), who competed in the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships over the weekend. She recorded a time of 1:39.9 over 500m which was the fastest time in Australia in the U/16’s division! Well done, Ella!
Secondary Swimming Carnival
Nominations opened this week for students wishing to compete in the Secondary Swimming Carnival later this term. Unfortunately, due to ongoing COVID restrictions, like so many other events in sport, we’ve had to reimagine what this day looks like, and therefore, this year, we’ve had to restrict entries to competitive swimmers only.
I know I share the disappointment of the student cohort that this day will not be the usual festival of swimming, colour and noise that we love so much, but we are pleased to be able to provide the opportunity for our competitive swimmers to participate in the 2021 representative swimming pathway.
Nominations will be open until Friday 6 November. The nomination form is available on the Sport Canvas front page.
Term 1 2021 Secondary Sport Senior/Junior 1sts Trials
By the time you read this, the nominations for Term 1 2021 Secondary Sports will have closed. Late nominations will still be accepted, but you need to pop down to the Sport Department ASAP to put your name down.
Trials and skills sessions for various Term 1 sports will begin from next week – all the details were sent out via a Canvas announcement, and can be found on the front page of Sport Canvas, as well as the sport-specific pages.
A reminder for all spectators this weekend to please follow the instructions at the venue you are attending. Some venues are not permitting spectators, and some have restrictions of one spectator per player – all this information is available on the Upcoming Fixtures and Events page in Canvas. All venues that are welcoming spectators will require you to sign in on arrival (usually via a QR code), maintain 1.5 metres between people from other households and follow appropriate hygiene practices such as washing hands.
Staying Safe at Sport
As a reminder, the following protocols are in currently in place for LN Sport:
- IGSSA, IPSHA, HKDTA and Rowing NSW have advised that spectators are welcome to return to Saturday sport fixtures, with each venue ultimately responsible for deciding whether spectators are permitted to return.
- Please comply with the track & tracing, social distancing and hygiene procedures that will be in place at each venue. If you are unsure, please ask the venue coordinator or a member of staff.
- Please do not arrive any earlier than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of your fixture.
We appreciate your ongoing patience and cooperation with these protocols.
Weather & Venue Closures
With some inclement weather being predicted across Sydney on Saturday, please make sure you know where to check for venue closures. The links for each Venue Closure site are further down in this newsletter, and they are also available for each sport on the Upcoming Fixtures and Events page in Canvas.
Please make sure you check the site or app relevant to your sport before leaving home on Saturday.
Loreto Sports Girl: Ashe O’Kelly
Current sport/activity: Rowing and this is my second season.
Favourite school sport/activity: Hockey in Term 3 and Rowing in Terms 1 and 4.
Highest level of sporting achievement: Coming 4th in a race at one of the regattas last year with my crew.
Best moment of Loreto Sport for you: When I fell out of a single scull on a windy day whilst my fellow Year 9’s were rowing past with grins on their faces – a day I will never forget, or get to forget!
Favourite sporting moment as a spectator: Cheering on/watching my peers crossing the line first at regattas, as it would make me happy knowing that their efforts had pulled off.
Best subject at school: Drama, as it has a balance of practical and theory lessons.
Any superstitions before playing sport: Before a race at a regatta we have a ritual of sending high fives down the boat and then the girl in Bow seat taps the Bow of the boat for good luck.
Best tune to listen to before competing: R.I.P 2 My Youth by The Neighborhood.
Wet Weather Information
Please make sure you check the relevant wet weather sites for any news regarding cancellations.
