Welcome and welcome back!
As summer holidays dissolve into a distant memory, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new students, including our new Year 5 and Year 7 cohorts, as well as welcoming back all our returning students for what is going to be another action-packed year of sport!
It’s exciting times here, with AFL about to kick off its inaugural season in the Secondary School, with old favourites IGSSA Softball, IGSSA Tennis and LN Invitational Badminton about to begin too. Our rowers have passed the midway point of the season and have the finish line in sight after January Camp (more on them in a minute) and our Primary School students are getting stuck into IPSHA Football and IPSHA Flippaball/Water Polo. On top of that, coming up this term we’ve got IGSSA and IPSHA Swimming and Diving Championships, NSW All Schools Triathlon, Tildesley Tennis Championships, the Head of the River and Cross Country Trials – and that’s all before Easter! It’s all systems go and that’s how we like it – #LetsGoLoreto!
It was a tough and rewarding four days at Tarban Creek and SIRC as our rowers got back into the swing of things after the summer hiatus. Our Head of Rowing, Ian Edmunds, and his team of coaching staff, put the squad through their paces as preparations now focus on peaking at the right part of the season. It was fantastic to see the students get straight back to work with focus and effort aplenty. A huge thanks to our Rowing Parent Support Group who coordinated the catering for the students across the four days.
New year, new students, new opportunities to make the Loreto Normanhurst Swimming & Diving Team to compete at the IGSSA and IPSHA Championships! Returning students will have the times they swum at the school carnivals at the end of last year used or the times they swum at the Year 7 Orientation Day, however for students new to the school this year or for students who missed last year’s carnivals or Orientation Day trials, they will have the opportunity to record a time to be eligible for selection into the LN team. Trials will be held after school in the Aquatic Centre on the dates listed below.
Primary Students (Year 5 & new Year 6 students): Wednesday 5th February
Secondary Students (All new secondary students who did not swim at the Primary or Secondary Carnival, or who did not swim at the Orientation Day trial): Wednesday 12th February
Over the holiday break, Year 12 student Abby Hartshorne won two bronze medals in the Women’s 17 years & Over 100m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle. In doing so, she has now qualified for compete in three events at the Australian Swimming Team Olympic Trials which are to be held in June in Adelaide. Amazing effort! Congratulations and go Abby!
Another piece of fantastic news from Juliet Lahood (Year 12) – she has been named by the Australian Institute of Sport as an Emerging Athlete, which gives her access to a range of opportunities to help her further her pursuit of taekwondo excellence! We look forward to hearing more of Juliet’s achievements throughout year.
– To our swimmers and members of the LN Swim Club as they compete at the Cole Classic this Sunday. The Cole Classic is an ocean swimming event at Manly so good luck to those flying the LN flag!
– To all our students kicking off the Term 1 sporting season next week (February 8th), with a special mention to our Loreto AFL teams as they begin the inaugural ISC AFL Secondary AFL competition!
– To our rowers competing at the NSW State Championships on the weekend of February 8th and 9th out at SIRC.
– To our softballers who will be trialing for a spot in the IGSSA Representative Softball Squad on February 13th.
