Term 3 Sport

Welcome back to Term 3 and a new batch of sports for the students to get stuck into! Best of luck to our IGSSA Netball and IGSSA Hockey teams who begin their competitions this Saturday, as do our Rugby 7’s girls taking part in the Pymble Invitational season on Saturday afternoons. Our Hills Netball girls begin the home stretch of the season, with only a few rounds to go until finals. Our Primary School girls will be in action with the touch footy and AFL seasons kicking off this weekend and our Cheer Squad continues their preparation for their competitions later this term.

Good luck to everyone involved and I’m looking forward to an awesome term of sport ahead!

All Schools Cross Country

Our top distance runners competed today at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek. Charlotte Ryan (Year 12) got the day off to a cracking start, finishing 5th overall in the 18’s race, and she was closely followed by Madeline Playford (year 11) in the 17’s race who came home in 7th. Georgia Arcus (Year 10) ran a very brave race in the 15’s but was unlucky to pick up a stitch mid-race. Neve Tierney (Year 7) and Grace Pellarini (Year 8) finishing the day with a couple of gutsy runs, officially finishing 14th and 15th overall in the 13’s race, but sharing a time of 12:53 as they crossed the line together. Well done to all our All Schools runners!

In more awesome news from the holidays, Sophie Dwyer (Year 12) was part of the NSW Waratahs team that contested the ANL Grand Final in Melbourne. Unfortunately, her Waratahs went down by one goal in a thrilling match, but she played brilliantly, shooting an amazing 31 from 34 attempts, for which Sophie was deservedly recognized as the Grand Finals’ Most Valuable Player. Well done, Sophie!

Congratulations to Charlotte Horbach (Year 5) who, prior to the holidays, spent a week in Brisbane representing the NSW Institute of Sport, training, and competing at the Australian Elite Junior Diving Championships. Charlotte won gold in the 1 metre springboard and bronze in the 3 metre springboard individual events. An outstanding achievement Charlotte! Read more about Charlotte below in our Loreto Sports Girl feature.

Interschools Snowsports

Whilst most of the school was resting and recuperating over the winter break, our Snowsports team was lighting up the snow with some awesome performances at the Northern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships. Seventeen students represented Loreto and they all performed magnificently. Huge congratulations to Dominique Rossell (Year 12) who won two gold medals for her performance in the Division 1 Snowboard GS and Snowboard X individual events – she and sister Eliza Rossell (Year 9) also teamed up to win a gold and a silver in the teams events after Eliza finished 5th in both events. Aoife Berry (Year 6) continued the snowboard success, finishing 8th in the Division 4 Snowboard GS. Laura Woods (Year 10) had a great performance in the Division 1 Alpine, finishing 15th overall. All four girls have earned an invitation to the State Interschools Snowsports Championships in August.

It was also amazing to see students who were competing for the first time give it a try and exceed their expectations.

If this has piqued your interested in competing for Loreto Normanhurst in skiing or snowboarding, next year’s Northern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships will be held in Thredbo from July 7th – July 11th! All are welcome to have a go – for more info, shoot an email to the Sport Department.

Friday Night Athletics

In preparation for the upcoming IGSSA Athletics Championships, our Athletics team is tuning up, with the first of four Twilight Athletics meets tonight at SOPAC. Good luck to all our competitors!

Well done to Georgia Arcus (Year 10), Arabella Price (Year 9), Zara Warland (Year 9) and Elli Barron (Year 8) who were silver medalists in the U16 4x2km Waratah Run Street Relay last month. A great result!

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Congratulations to Anna Hanselmann (Year 12) and Nitasha Dewan (Year 12) who have been granted the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. The Gold Award requires dedication and perseverance to achieve and Anna and Nitasha have shown these qualities and more in attaining this Award. Well done ladies!

Thank you in advance, for your cooperation in this matter. It is our expectation that you will be appropriately dressed and in uniform while representing Loreto Normanhurst. Please see your sport specific booklets for full details on what uniform is required for your sport.
