Welcome back

It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the successes and enjoyment of a fantastic Term 1 of sport, but it’s time to go again – bring on Term 2! This term, we have our usual lineup of IGSSA Football, IGSSA Basketball and Hills Netball for the Secondary School, and IPSHA Hockey for the Primary School. On top of that, there are a multitude of IGSSA Representative Trials and Pathways events (more on that later in the newsletter), the Primary and Secondary School Athletics Carnivals, the Coona Expo Equestrian… it’s going to be another busy term in Sport – lets go Loreto!

IGSSA Representative Trials

Term 2 kicks off with a bang, with trials for students to represent IGSSA in basketball, netball, hockey and football all in the first eight days – and we already have some fantastic news with  Ainsley Woods (Year 12) selected into the IGSSA Basketball team. Well done Ainsley!

As we go to print, our netballers are battling for a place in the IGSSA U/15’s and Opens teams – good luck to Erin O’Brien (Year 10), Charli Fidler (Year 10), Isabelle Barker (Year 11), Grace Gillies (Year 10), Madeline Playford (Year 11) and Charlotte Black (Year 10) in the Opens and Paige Critchlow (Year 9), Clare Doherty (Year 9), Breanna Harris (Year 8) and Mia Hartley (Year 9) in the Under 15’s.

Next Tuesday it’s hockey’s turn, and we wish Charlotte Flaherty (Year 12) and Piper Walker (Year 11) all the best in their efforts to make the IGSSA Opens Hockey Squad.

We finish off on Wednesday with the footballers, with Greta Kraszula (Year 11), Grace Thomas (Year 11), Eloise Hansen (Year 11) and Anabel Waldock (Year 10) all on show for a spot in the IGSSA team.

Good luck to all those trialists!

CIS Cup Football

Before the IGSSA season kicks off this Saturday, our Football Cup team was in action on Monday, taking on Moriah College in the CIS Cup. It was a thrilling match, with plenty of chances at each end, however all arm wrestles must finish, and it was the Normo girls who won through, with goals to Eve Whittaker (Year 12) and Eloise Hansen (Year 11), combined with a staunch defensive effort and a clean sheet seeing the final score recorded as 2-0. The Quarter Finals are next, with Mamre Anglican College standing in the way of another semi-final berth.

CIS Swim & Dive Championships

On Wednesday and Thursday, our swimmers were back in the pool at SOPAC, representing IGSSA at the CIS Championships. It’s started in fantastic fashion, with the first event of the meet seeing our 6 x 50 All Age Relay team in action. The team, consisting of Cate Smith (Year 7), Cordelia Stephen (Year 8), Charlotte Rigney (Year 8), Felicity Smith (Year 9), Abby Feurtado (Year 10) and Abby Hartshorne (Year 11), swam incredibly well to finish 3rd and book their spot to NSW All Schools in a couple of weeks. On Thursday, it was more medals for Normo, with Maddison Hinds (Year 8) and Claudia Stratton (Year 9) wasting no time in collecting a gold and a bronze respectively in the 15 & U 50m Multiclass Freestyle, also earning them both a swim at NSW All Schools. Maddie didn’t stop there – not by a long shot! She finished the day with a whopping five gold medals and one silver in a sensational individual performance. Abby Hartshorne also had a fantastic day in the pool, collecting bronze in the 17+ 200m fly, 4th in the 17+ 100m fly and top 6 finishes in the 17+ 50m fly and 17+ 100m freestyle. Felicity Smith rounded out the day with a great swim in the 15’s 100m freestyle, finishing 6th in a very competitive field.

Congratulations to all our swimmers and we look forward to seeing them back in action at NSW All Schools in a couple of weeks time.

Over the holidays, Yasmin Say (Year 10) representing NSW in the Australasian U/17’s Badminton Championships with fantastic success. Yasmin finished 2nd in the Girls’ Doubles, Consolation winner in Mixed Doubles and 2nd placed overall as part of the NSW Thunder Team. Yasmin was also given the distinction of being awarded the Val Nesbitt Trophy, which is awarded to the player of the tournament who exhibits the highest standards of sportsmanship, personality, court demeanor, player ability and appearance. Well done, Yasmin!

As Term 1 finished, Sophie Dwyer (Year 12) was just getting started – she was competing with the NSW side at the Under 19’s National Netball Championships. NSW played with great success for the entire tournament and were just edged in the final to come away with a silver medal. In exciting news, Sophie has been named in the Australian U/19’s Squad which is a huge achievement – well done and very much deserved, Sophie!

Junior State Cup Touch Football

Over the holidays, Normo students swapped the LN navy and gold for their club colours to represent at the NSW Junior State Cup Touch Football Tournament in Wollongong. It was a fantastic tournament, with some highlights including Mia Jones’ (Year 8) Central Coast team finishing as NSW Champions after winning their Grand Final 7-2, and Grace Thomas (Year 11) representing Ryde-Eastwood finishing in the bronze medal position – a fantastic achievement as most of her team were 16 playing up in the U/18’s division.

A huge congrats to all the Loreto Normanhurst students who took part in State Cup – we can’t wait for touch season to roll back around now!
