Primary School News
Welcome back to all our families. We hope you had a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday with family and friends.
NAIDOC celebrations are usually held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year National NAIDOC Week 2020 celebrations will be held from the 8-15 November due to the impacts and uncertainty of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic across our communities and cities.
At Loreto, we celebrated NAIDOC Week this week and began Term 3 with a livestream symbolic Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Gavi. Our Primary School Leaders attended the ceremony and noted, “The smoking ceremony was an amazing opportunity to see what the Aboriginal culture involves. We enjoyed listening to Uncle Gavi sing, play the didgeridoo and share his wisdom. It was amazing to be able to participate in an Aboriginal tradition, the smoking of the eucalyptus leaves. We were given the opportunity to walk around the smoking ceremony and take a moment to think about the original elders of this land. “
The 2020 theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies.
This year we have re-imagined the way that the Frangipani Fair will take place. We were very fortunate last year to have some wonderful guest speakers who spoke to the primary girls about what it takes to become an entrepreneur.
If you would like to share your entrepreneurial wisdom and inspiration with the Primary girls, please contact Judy Oliver at Primary Reception if you are interested in this opportunity.
Hip, hip, hooray to the following birthday girls. We hope you had a wonderful day!
