‘The important thing is to never stop questioning.’
Welcome back to all our families. We hope you had a relaxing holiday time with family and friends.
On Tuesday night, the Year 5 students proudly displayed the fruits of all their hard work at the Science Fair. It’s true to say that the energy in the room was electric! A huge thank you to Ms Raymond and Mr Adams for inspiring the girls to think big. Thank you also to the parents and Mrs Bateman for attending this wonderful event.
This week also saw the much anticipated ‘Kidpreneur’ kick off. The Year 6 leaders shared their experience and wisdom from last year and imparted some very handy tips to Year 5. The girls have been placed in groups of three from across Years 5 and 6 and were delighted to unpack the contents of their Kidpreneur kits today. The Kidpreneur Market Day takes place on Friday 9 September. So save the date as it certainly is a day not to be missed.
During the holidays four of our Year 6 girls realised some wonderful sporting achievements.
Belle Reid and Eliza Rossell competed for Loreto Normanhurst at the Northern NSW Inter-schools Snow Sports Competition which was held in Thredbo. Belle competed in the Moguls and Ski Alpine events and Eliza competed in the Snowboard Giant Slalom and Snowboard Cross events.
Both girls competed well in very challenging weather and course conditions. Eliza qualified in both events to compete at the NSW/ACT State Championships in August. Good luck Eliza!
Zoe Lawson plays for the representative under 13 Hornsby District Softball Team. She was recently selected to play in the Australia Cup, with her team winning 3 games out of 5. Mia Hartley represented the under 12 Hills Stage Age Netball Team at the Campbelltown State Age Championship. Placing 12th out of 19 teams. Outstanding achievements, well done girls.
With the Year 6 excursion to Canberra quickly approaching, we strongly suggest that if the girls have not purchased a Loreto polar fleece it might be wise to do so given the icy conditions in Sydney. Uniforms are available to be purchased through FlexiSchools and will be delivered directly to your daughter at school.
Year 5 Science Fair
This week saw Year 5 showcase their scientific investigations in the form of our Loreto Primary Annual Science Fair. The theme for the students’ investigations revolved around electricity and circuits. The aim of the project was to not only develop a hypothesis for investigation but to actually collect data and experiment with an element of physical phenomena. The night was a great success with students sharing their new learnings and insights with our parents and school leadership team.
Indianna Cane from 5R reflected on her investigation ‘Mouse Power’ and the new insights from her experience:
Our project was about mouse power – or rather whether a mouse could run fast enough to power a light bulb. Slight problem; it turns out that neither of the mice – we had two, one had a wheel in its cage and one didn’t – wanted to run on the day! Becca (my partner) and I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for the project. The satisfaction of finishing the project was more powerful than the complete exhaustion felt after we created and made the experiment.
One aspect we found challenging was actually building the wheel which could generate electricity. We had to figure out where to put the wires and how to connect them. I learnt a lot about how to include others ideas, and it was so much more fun when we did it together, rather than trying to have separate jobs. The science fair was amazing, and I can’t wait to do more science investigations this term!
