Learning never exhausts the mind.

Leonardo da Vinci

As I write this article, our Year 5 girls are sitting the first of their NAPLAN papers. I visited the girls this morning to wish them the very best and I am pleased to say they seemed happy, calm and quietly confident.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers. da Vinci demonstrated an ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover the unknown. The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines including Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science and English. The Decathlon competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem solving and creativity.

This term we will be sending two teams of girls from Years 5 and 6 to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon which will take place at Knox Grammar School. In selecting the teams, we considered the program’s criteria and the skills the girls have demonstrated to meet them. Our aim is to provide an eclectic balance of skills that will contribute to the synergy of a creative team. We look forward to a wonderful day of challenges.

In the Primary School

In Integrated Learning this term we looked at Australia’s official flags (ensigns) and what they are used for. We learnt that a competition was held to make Australia’s new flag after Federation. The winner of the competition received £200 (about $30 000 now!), so Year 6 travelled back in time and designed their own ensign to represent Australia. We have also explored the rights of men in early Australia and how then men fought against licenses in order to gain their rights by the means of the Eureka Stockade. We designed political cartoons and raps describing this change for men. We are now investigating women’s suffrage and how it took longer for women to gain their right to vote.
