The art of democracy and leading

Democracy is a system of government in which a country’s political leaders are chosen by the people in regular, free and fair elections. In a democracy, people have a choice between candidates and parties who want the power to govern. The people can criticise and replace their elected leaders and representatives if they do not perform well. The people are the highest authority and government is based on the will of the people. Elected representatives at the local and national levels must listen to the people and be responsible to their needs.

At the moment in Australian politics, we live in uncertain times with a Government seemingly unclear of its leadership and vision for the people of Australia. In contrast, at Loreto Normanhurst, we have a clear vision of what we want for our students. This is articulated in the School’s Mission Statement to: ‘encourage each student to fulfil her academic and personal potential, in an atmosphere of freedom, care and respect for the individual’.  Leadership at Loreto Normanhurst is also based on the principles of democracy. Every student has a say in electing student leaders, and we are currently in the process of finalising the House Council and SRC positions for the next 12 months.

We have also just voted and elected students into their 2019 House Conductor roles which is very exciting and we congratulate the following students:

Aston House Conductor for 2019

Akshara Yogesvaran, Year 10

Barry House Conductor for 2019

Sophie Andreou, Year 10

Kendall House Conductor for 2019

Alice Compton, Year 11

Kuring-gai House Conductor for 2019

Bianca Meleca, Year 10

Maye House Conductor for 2019

Eve Whittaker, Year 11

Mornane House Conductor for 2019

Isabelle Sullivan, Year 11

Mulhall House Conductor for 2019

Samantha North, Year 10

Ward House Conductor for 2019

Sarah Maguire, Year 11

The school is very clear in its vision and leadership aspirations for students. Students are empowered to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity in loving and responsible service. Our student leaders could definitely pass this message on to those in any public office in the country. I encourage parents to speak to their daughters about their leadership goals, aspirations, politics and the principles of democracy.
