Welcome back to 2017 at Loreto Normanhurst and a very special welcome to new families.
We have already started the year with much activity across the Parent Community as the Parent Association of Loreto (PAL) committee members met with new families to welcome them to Loreto Normanhurst during the Morning Teas held on Monday and Tuesday for Years 5 – 11 this week.
This will be an extra special year at Loreto Normanhurst as we join together in celebrations to mark the 120 Year anniversary of Loreto Normanhurst in 1897. Our parent community will be invited to attend a special Cocktail Party which will be held on Friday 3 March 2017, to celebrate this significant milestone and Louise & I look forward to catching up with many of you there.
The Loreto Normanhurst calendar details all the key dates for significant school activities, social functions and fund raising initiatives throughout each term – so keep your eye out for this.
You will hear us talk a lot about how you can get involved at Loreto Normanhurst. We hope you will continue your involvement if you are an existing family or join in if you are a new family, with our active parent community. All are truly welcome and we appreciate everyone’s help in one of the following ways:
Volunteering: Help out as a Parent Co-Ordinator (details below) or as a volunteer helper at a school event.
Participation: Social events contribute to building a strong community, whilst helping you get to know your daughter’s friends’ parents.
Sharing: Your knowledge, ideas, skills, experience and feedback across a range of School and PAL events.
Support: We welcome your on-going support of school fund raising activities and charitable causes.
We would also encourage you to come along to the PAL General Meeting and hear first hand from Ms Watkins about what is planned for the school this year. Take the opportunity to ask a question or simply listen and understand a little more about the school’s plans for the year ahead. Our first meeting for 2017 will take place on Wednesday 8 March 2017– save the date in your diary now, we look forward to seeing you there!
There are many events throughout the year, organised by the School and/or the Parent Association and we will update you each week on activities and events through either email or the School Newsletter Parent Association page. Each week we will bring you highlights and updates on what is happening within our wonderful school community, with contributions provided by our representatives from each group who are part of our PAL Executive team.
Boarder Community Update: Mrs Sara Roche – PAL Boarder Liaison:
Once again Sunday afternoon saw the boarding house in full swing with all of our boarders returning to school. As always, there were a number of new boarders – some of these are younger sisters, but for many, it was the first daughter or even family member to be away.
Along with the new girls, there were a number of new staff members, who were all so wonderfully bright and cheery for our return.
The School and Boarder Parent Committee hosted drinks in the Gonzaga Barry Centre from 4pm which was a lovely way for parents to refresh after unpacking and bed making and provided an opportunity for them to really catch up with friends and welcome all of the new families into the Loreto family socially. This is always such a lovely event, as it is a time when you can meet and catch up with parents from all year groups located all the way across the state, interstate and even overseas. Following drinks, the majority of parents moved on for a quiet dinner in air conditioned comfort, at the Blue Gum Hotel, Waitara, which was especially welcome, given the Sydney humidity.
I am sure all the boarders would have been glad when a cooler change moved through Sydney on Tuesday evening. Their parents living west of the divide may wish they were all on the coast as well this week. as we continue to experience 40+ degree days for the next week at least.
Primary Liaison Role – Mrs Katrina Leonardi:
It is our great pleasure to announce Mrs Katrina Leonardi as the new Primary School Liaison on our PAL Executive committee. Katrina has a daughter Chiara commencing in Year 5 as well as an older daughter Isabella who is in Year 8. Katrina and the team are excited about the year ahead with many exciting things planned for Primary specifically as well as whole school events where we can come together and celebrate all that Loreto has to offer across Years 5 – 12.
For all our new families, just to re-cap what the Parent Association is all about: –
PARENT ASSOCIATION of Loreto– PAL:
The Executive Committee oversees and is responsible for all the PAL events run throughout the year. The Executive is also responsible for the financial health and governance of the organisation.
Subcommittees are formed to manage the planning of large events. This year our major PAL event will be a our Biennial Spring Fair, which will take place on Sunday 22 October 2017. Whilst Executive Committee members are often involved in event management, we are very grateful for the offers of support from volunteers across the parent community who ensure the success of these events. Please contact Mal Foubister if you would like to be involved in the Spring Fair team or any other event throughout the year.
Parent Coordinators: Parent Coordinators are a fabulous resource to ‘spread the word’ and encourage attendance across all year groups for PAL events. In addition, Parent Coordinators often organise smaller year group functions which, as well as being fun, play an important role in facilitating connections between you and the parents of your daughter’s friends. If you are interested in being a Year Coordinator please contact Sue Whipps or Louise Wytenburg . Alternatively, please come along to our information night – ALL welcome – on Thursday 9 February 2017 at 7.45 pm in the Brewer room (adjacent to Boarder Reception area) where we will have a cup of tea and a chat about what this role will look like in 2017.
