Oratory Report

It is with great excitement that I can confirm Oratory@LN is about to get back into the swing of things. In the coming weeks, students are encouraged to review the Oratory Canvas Page for any upcoming announcements.

Congratulations to Sabyn Baker (Year 12) who has entered the Hornsby Zonta, Young Women in Public Affairs Award. We wish Sabyn the best of luck as we await the results from this competition. Good luck to Erin Longney (Year 11) and Olivia Alexander (Year 10) who are participating in the Plain English Speaking Competition via a recorded video submission. We wish them the best of luck as they prepare their submissions.

Good luck to the following students participating in the CSDA Public Speaking Zone Finals on Friday 12 June, via Zoom at school. Its great to see that our students will have a chance to share their speeches in a live format.

Year 12 – Samantha Parsons, Maanya Maini
Year 11 –  Erin Longney
Year 10 – Olivia Alexander
Year 9 – Lucy Johnston & Frances O’Brien
Year 8 – Tahlia Moses & Myra Maini
Year 7 – Rose Cunningham & Ava Martin

Mock Trial will resume in an online format this term. Information regarding coaching and trial dates will be published on the Oratory Canvas Page and students are encouraged to review this regularly.

Kirby Cup will take a different format this year as students will work in groups to develop a response to a stimulus material. This response can take the form of an essay or interpreted and analysed in a creative manner such as drama. Year 10 and Year 11 students who are interested in a career in law, should consider applying to be a part of the team. Information will be shared via the Oratory Canvas Page and Legal Studies students will be contacted directly.

Archdale Debating will resume in Term 3 and the draw will be published via the newsletter and the Oratory Canvas Page. Teams will be organised in the coming weeks and any student who signed up for Archdale will be contacted to see if they are still interested. The competition will initially run virtually and information about timing and format will be communicated in the coming days as we work through the finer details.

CSDA Debating is still hoping to run in a shortened version in Term 3. Information will be shared via the Oratory Canvas page for students and via the newsletter for parents.

Oratory in the current climate

In recent weeks we have seen discussion and awareness raised about many of the injustices that exist in our world.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama in her book, “Becoming” writes: ‘If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the power of using your voice. I tried my best to speak the truth and shed light on the stories of people who are often brushed aside’.

Oratory@LN aims to help all students find their voice and share their truths. You don’t need to be a public speaker or a debater. If you are passionate about sharing a truth, the Oratory team will help you on the path to learn the skills of public speaking and or debating.
