Welcome to Loreto Normanhurst Oratory for 2021 and a warm welcome to all new students. Oratory is building up for another year of exciting events and we look forward to once again seeing many of our students partake in the varied opportunities that we provide at Loreto Normanhurst.

Over the coming weeks, information will be emailed to students regarding the various teams and competitions they can enroll in. I encourage you to sit with your daughters and discuss their goals for extra-curricular this year. There are several opportunities that cater for all levels.

Sydney University Mock United Nations

Congratulations to Cheri Hui (Year 11) who during the holidays participated in the Sydney University Mock United Nations as an intern for the International Law Commission. Cheri was selected to participate based on her nomination to the organisers at the end of last year. Please enjoy her reflection here:

These holidays, I had the pleasure of participating in SydMUN (Sydney University Mock United Nations) 2020 as an intern for the International Law Commission. As a committee, we worked to come to a resolution over the topic of Reservations to International Human Rights Treaties, specifically regarding the VCLT (Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties). This was an extremely valuable experience as most members of the committee were university students who guided us interns through the process of debating, drafting and proposing a memorandum paper. Over the course of three days we debated and worked together in our committee, heard many inspirational talks, including one from The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, as well as participating in fun challenges like dance-offs. Overall, the experience opened my eyes to the world of international politics and helped me form valuable connections with new people.

Lions Youth of the Year Quest

Congratulations to Annika Shankar (Year 12) who this week participated in the Lions Youth of the Year Quest and was awarded the Public Speaking winner. A great start to the season for Annika and Oratory@LN.

Goodluck to Erin Longney (Year 12) and Michelle Hoffman (Year 11) who will also compete in this competition in the coming week.

Public Speaking

Registrations have opened for Public Speaking and students are encouraged to sign up via this form. Please see the Oratory Desk at the Extra-curricular Fair at lunch on Monday 15 February to find out more information. Registering now will mean that you will trial for either the CSDA Public Speaking Competition and/or the Rostrum Voice of Youth. Coaching will be conducted on a Thursday afternoon in the lead up to these events if you are selected to participate. Parents please ensure that you read the Public Speaking Dates 2021 for Term 1 with your daughter to ensure she is available to attend.

Please note that these events are not held at Loreto Normanhurst and students are required to make their own way to the venues. Staff will be present, but will be adjudicating, so parent supervision will be required. All Public Speaking events occur after school hours.

Registrations will close on Monday 15 February at 5pm and trials will be held on Thursday 17 February in the afternoon. Information will be sent directly to students.

Mock Mediation/Mock Trial

This year we are offering students the opportunity to expand their legal skills and are offering the opportunity for students in Years 9-10 to participate in Mock Mediation. This program focuses on the mediation process. Students have been invited to trial for both Mock Mediation and Mock Trial. We wish these students the best of luck as they prepare.

Oratory Club

In 2021, Loreto Normanhurst will offer a new program for all students in Years 7-12. Oratory Club will focus on teaching students the skills of debating and public speaking. We aim to give students the confidence to ‘have a go’ in a safe and secure space. Participation will require a commitment to attending Thursday afternoon sessions from 3:30pm-5:00pm each week for a term at a time.

Each term will have a different focus. Term one will focus simply on developing the confidence in our students to speak in public. This will coincide with various curriculum activities and also the start of the public speaking program.

Registrations will open in Week 5 and the program will commence in Week 6.

Please see the Oratory desk at the Extra-curricular Fair at lunch on Monday 15 February for further information.

The YMCA Youth Parliament

Registrations are currently open for students in Years 10-12 to nominate for participation in the YMCA Youth Parliament.
