Essay and Skills Course

Students in Years 9 and 10  have the opportunity to participate in an Essay and Skills Course being held in the upcoming school holidays. Essay writing becomes a large part of schooling in senior years and this course prepares students to become more confident and competent when confronted with essay exam questions or assessment essays.

Sydney University Year 10 2015 Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to Morgan Ridley-Smith for her Sydney University award for academic excellence.  Morgan received a certificate at the Awards night in 2015 and this week the presentation was at the University of Sydney.

On Tuesday April 5 she received her medallion from Professor Tyrone Carlin, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Registrar) at the Year 10 2015 Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony in the Maclaurin Hall.  The Award ceremony included refreshments, a string quartet performance by students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and speech from a second year Bachelor of Science (Advanced)/Doctor of Medicine student whose message connected well with the students at the ceremony.

During the award ceremony 89 medallions were presented to students in NSW schools of which 62 were to females and 27 were to male students. Morgan’s results, diligence, organisation and efficiency in learning made it possible for her to be a worthy recipient of this award.

Science Competition

The Science competition, conducted by Educational Assessment Australia (of the University of New South Wales), will be held on Tuesday, 31   of May. It involves no cost to you and is a great way for students to test their Science knowledge and skills against students from across NSW. The Science and Mathematics Competition takes place each year in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region.  The competition provides an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation.

All students receive a certificate and an individual results letter indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/region. These documents are suitable for inclusion in a portfolio.

Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:

  • High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants
  • Distinction to the next 10% of entrants
  • Credit to the next 20% of entrants
  • Participation to all other participating students.

Medals are awarded to the top students in each year level in each state.

Further information can be found  here.

There is no cost to enter.

At Loreto Normanhurst, all students in Year 7 participate in the competition and are entered automatically. If your daughter is in Year 7 and you don’t wish her to participate, contact me to have her entry withdrawn.

Any student from Years 8 to 12 may choose to enter. If you would like your daughter to participate all she needs to do is complete her details in the survey here.

Entries close on Monday 2   May.

Head of Science
