We want the internet to thrive and keep children safe – they are not mutually exclusive but we need to re-calibrate. Do we have the right balance?
Julie Inman Grant, #eSafety Commissioner, opening the #eSafety2017 Conference in November 2017
At Loreto Normanhurst we try and balance the use of technology for positive collaboration and enhanced learning by providing strategies for the girls to work in a safe digital environment.
In early February, the school’s involvement in Safer Internet Day extended to ‘Safer Internet Days’. To this end we have started delivering brief presentations and workshops for the students with #eSafety strategies and activities during Conversation periods (Years 7-10) and Curriculum periods (Years 11-12).
The Digital Pathways program at Loreto is underpinned at its base with the concept and practice of digital respect. Each presentation has been tailored to the age, skills and experiences of the students. In summary, the focus has been on Digital Footprints and Digital Reputation (Years 7-8), Digital Citizenship and Digital Resource Management (Years 9-10) and Digital Resource Management and Digital Leadership (Years 11-12). In the spirit of double dip learning, the more senior year groups do have updates of the earlier strategies.
What can parents do? In this week’s newsletter, our Director of Pastoral Care, Mrs Lynn Long, writes about striking the right balance between online time for education and online time for entertainment and social networking.
Here are eight tips from the Office of eSafety Commissioner iParent Portal on how to keep on top of your child’s screen time:
- Lead by example.
- Plan screen-free time – like outdoor play, music and sport.
- Be involved- watch TV and play games together.
- Agree on daily screen time limits. It is not a punishment; it’s about keeping balance.
- Start with small reductions to lessen any resistance.
- Resist giving mobile devices to children when going out – take books or toys instead.
- Set tech-free zones and times – e.g. time off tech in bedrooms after a specified time.
- Use tech tools to manage access such as parental controls.
