The Canberra Excursion is taking place next week from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 May 2021 (Week 4).

An important email was sent to parents today regarding the new COVID-19 requirements.  Please read this email and complete the necessary requirements.  This email has also been sent to your daughter.

Please do not hesitate to email the Learning Office with any queries.

Mr Michael Rafe

Acting Head of History

Years 7 to 11 Academic Plenaries

The first of two Academic Plenaries are occurring today with the second one occurring on Tuesday 18 May from 3.30pm to 8.30pm.  Teachers will be available for five-minute meetings held via Zoom and only one booking per teacher can be made for each student.

Please click to view the following PDF links for further information about the process. All necessary information is included in these three documents.

Reservations for the Plenary meetings are made online through the PTO Website.

This site will remain available for you to access your teacher Zoom meeting links at the time of your meeting.  You will be able to change your PTO appointment times until 10am on the day prior to each plenary date.  If there are any changes that need to be made after this time, please email the Learning Office.  When booking your plenaries, if your daughter is a day student, please factor in the time it will take for her to travel home, so that she is able to attend the Zoom Plenaries with you.

All parents are encouraged to book PTO Zoom Plenary meetings and if there are any circumstances that prevent you from conducting meetings using the Zoom format, please contact your daughter’s Head of House.

We thank you for your assistance. Please email learning@loretonh.nsw.edu.au if you have any questions.

Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN

NAPLAN will take place next week, Tuesday 11 to Friday 14 May.  The schedule is as follows:

Year 7

11th May – Periods 1 & 2 – Year 7 Reading

12th May – Periods 1 & 2 – Year 7 Writing

13th May – Periods 1 & 2 – Year 7 Language Conventions

14th May – Periods 1 & 2 – Year 7 Numeracy

Year 9

11th May – Periods 3 & 4 – Year 9 Reading

12th May – Periods 3 & Conversations – Year 9 Writing

13th May – Periods 3 & 4 – Year 9 Language Conventions

14th May – Periods 3 & 4 – Year 9 Numeracy

Please be assured that your daughter is well prepared for NAPLAN, as the work that she completes across all of her subject areas is ample preparation for these assessments. There is no need to for her to undertake additional study.  Students have also engaged in online practice tests last term to familiarise themselves with the testing platform. Our key message is that these tests are diagnostic in nature, providing your daughter and her teachers with a snapshot of where she sits on the learning continuum for Numeracy and Literacy, and to identify the skills and areas where your daughter can experience future growth.  It would be appreciated if you could reinforce this message with your daughter in your conversations at home.

Your daughter will need to bring the following to the testing:

  • Laptop – fully charged
  • Headphones or ear buds – preferably plug in
  • A pen, as working out paper will be available

It would be appreciated if you could please support us in helping your daughter to be organised with these items.  The NAPLAN Information Sheet is provided for your reference.  Further information can be found on the NAPLAN website and samples of NAPLAN questions can be found on this Link.

We have planned for catch-up testing on Monday 17 May.  If your daughter is unwell or absent on the day of a NAPLAN test and is unable to attend school, please email the Learning Office before 8.30am on the day of the test.  We thank you for your assistance with ensuring your daughter is prepared on each day of the assessments.

Philosophy Circle Pilot Program Update

The Philosophy Circle Pilot Program which commenced in the last week of Term 1 is now in full swing with groups from Years 6, 8, 10 and 12 engaging in philosophical discussions on a fortnightly basis in our school library. These groups have been facilitated by Ms Ugonotti (Year 12), Mrs Solo (Year 10), Ms Dwyer (Year 8) and Mr Scali (Year 6). So far, the program has covered:

Session 1: Introduction to philosophy with guest lecturer, Dr Xavier Symons of the Australian Catholic University.

Session 2: The Social Consequences of Artificial Intelligence.

Session 3: Freedom and Rights.

Session 4: The Purpose of Life.

Each session is structured with an opening stimulus source followed by prompting questions which initiate discussion. As an example, Session 2 involved the circle watching a clip from the Spike Jonze film, Her, followed by discussion around the questions:

What are the social consequences of developments in artificial intelligence?

What could occur in society and human behaviour if A.I. can become fully intuitive?

Some robust and profound discussions have already taken place, especially as the girls become more comfortable with listening to the views of others and allowing their own ideas to be challenged by new perspectives.

The remaining sessions for Term 2 will include:

Session 5: Friendship

Session 6: The Ethics of Space Exploration

Session 7: Forgiveness

Both staff and students have commented on how much they look forward to these fortnightly sessions where they can tap into deep thinking and express their thoughts freely. We all look forward to the sessions that remain in Term 2.

Mr Marco Scali

Acting Dean of Learning and Philosophy Pilot Program Coordinator.
