Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Post Logo Winner
Congratulations to Erika San Diego in Year 8 Aston.
Erika, along with some of her peers from the Mary Word student newspaper, entered a logo design competition run by a new local publication, the Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai Post. The competition was open to all members of the Hornsby and Kuring-gai area. Erika’s logo was chosen as the winner and will now appear on each cover of the newspaper, which ran its first issue in September.
Erika says that her design was inspired by natural features present in our local area, including gum leaves. As Erika says, the hands in her logo symbolise a community, “because in a community we hold each other up,” and a circle “because community is forever.” Erika was recognised for this wonderful contribution by Mayor Philip Ruddock.
The following reflection was provided by Erika to the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Post.
How did you feel about winning the logo design competition?
I found out that I won the logo design competition via an email from Mr Scali (my tutor and the supervisor for the Mary Word, the school newspaper). He had told me about the logo competition in the first place. I was quite shocked that I had won. There was obviously a wide range of students who had the opportunity to enter, and out of all of them, I was the one who had been chosen! I was also very grateful that my design was the design chosen to become the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Post logo, and happy that I was able to contribute to the community in a way.
What are some of your interests?
Some of my hobbies and extra-curricular activities include Photography Club, Mary Word which is the school newspaper, Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE), and I also play basketball. I am passionate about music. I can play the clarinet, guitar, piano and ukulele. I like to writing my own original songs and I love to perform in concerts, especially in SWE.
Do you have any ideas of what you would like to do after school?
I am not completely sure, but I have been quite interested in the topics that we are covering in Science. I am considering doing something in the science field. I have also been learning about engineering in D&T (Design and Technology), which actually perked my interest. I would love to find something that connects those things and pursue that. I would also love to study something that lets me express my creativity, like I can do in Music, but that also leads to a practical job.
