Head of Music
Term 1 has had a great start with many concerts and workshops for the Elective Music students. This year’s Encore Concert (exemplary HSC performances and compositions) was attended by our Years 11 and 12 music students and was held at the Opera House on Monday 19 February. The girls were inspired by the variety of musical styles and also by the talent of the performers.
On Thursday 22 February the Year 9 Elective Music class, Year 11 Music 1 and Year 12 Music 1, travelled to the Opera House for the first concert in the ‘Meet the Music’ series this year. The featured group was Taikoz (Australian ensemble of Japanese Drums) who performed some beautiful works with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The Year 11 girls had previously attended a workshop where they were given interesting background information and practical demonstrations.
Year 10 Music and Year 11 Music 2 classes attended their first ‘Meet the Music’ concert on Wednesday 28 February. It was a wonderful program featuring a contemporary Australian work by female composer, Elana Kats Chernin, a violin concerto and two works featuring a large orchestra.
This year’s Open Day featured our musical ensembles (Primary and Secondary) as well as some class items prepared by the Elective Music students. Open Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the variety and commitment of our music girls. The audience were very appreciative and the music added a celebratory character to the day. A big thank you to the girls who performed and also assisted with the set up and pack up. It was very much appreciated.
After nearly two terms of intense preparation, the highly anticipated Music Festival was a great success. Act One featured our wonderful Primary and Secondary Music Ensembles as well as the Boarder Choir, Light Entertainment and four selected feature items: Margaux Choo, Piano, Isabella Davey, Clarinet, Claire O’Connor, Vocals and a Year 11 item from Beatriz Fernandez, Violin, Jayda Gursel, Vocals and Piano, and Ella Nicol, Isabelle Sullivan and Eve Whittaker, Vocals.
Act Two featured our brilliant House Choirs and their interpretation of this year’s theme, ‘Celebrating Protest and Peace through Song’. The House conductors and accompanists were wonderful and our adjudicator was extremely impressed with their imagination and the high standard of the performances. After much deliberation the awards were announced:
Best Accompanist: Stephanie Arnold
Best Conductor: Ginger Soames
Best Choir: Barry House
Spirit Cup: Mulhall House
Congratulations to everyone on a wonderful night.
