Open Day 2021

Open Day is such an important opportunity for us to be able to showcase our school to prospective families. The 2021 Open Day was a different experience from past years, but was a fantastic success thanks to the hard work from staff and students.

Having joined Loreto Normanhurst staff as Chief Marketing Officer in January, 30 years after graduating from Year 12 here, I was thrilled that one of the first projects for the Marketing and Enrolments Teams was to prepare for Open Day. With the dreaded COVID restrictions continuing to evolve from week to week, we were forced to prepare for an Open Day like no other: a Virtual Open Day! The key challenge was how to bring to life the experience of Open Day online. We wanted to showcase for prospective families the beauty and expanse of our school grounds, the Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model and our FACE curriculum, our Boarding program, our impressive students and staff, and most importantly, the vibrant, warm and down-to-earth ‘feel’ of the Loreto Normanhurst community.

The Virtual Open Day microsite launched on Saturday 6 March at 11am and since then we have had 2800 people visit, for 4300 sessions! One of the upsides of going online was that we have been able to ensure that families who weren’t able to come to Loreto Normanhurst could participate in Open Day. We have had families visiting from rural NSW, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, and from as far away as Singapore, Dubai, London and New York. The most popular feature of our Open Day has been our virtual school tours. This has been a fantastic way to show off our beautiful grounds and to see our school in action. The Virtual Open Day also includes feature presentations from our Principal, Director of Pastoral Care, and our Director of Learning. We overview the Primary School and the Boarding School. The microsite also provides an in depth overview for each faculty presented by the Heads of Department, and a showcase of student experiences and work. For those who have had the opportunity to log on, I am sure you will agree that our Virtual Open Day is a fantastic reflection of life at Loreto Normanhurst.

A late twist to COVID restrictions provided the opportunity to bring families onsite for school tours on Open Day. It has been over a year since we have had a program of regular school tours, so we weren’t surprised when our onsite tours were booked out within 12 hours! We ran 120 family tours onsite, with the help of our new Student Ambassadors from Years 9, 10, and 11. The Student Ambassadors did an amazing job, and did their school proud as they explained the history of the school, as well as its current features, and confidently shared their own Loreto stories with the visiting families. As expected, our touring families were very impressed with our students. The Student Ambassador program will continue throughout the year, as we now embark on a regular program of Twilight Tours for prospective families.

I want to sincerely thank all of the staff and students who helped to make Open Day such a fantastic success. In particular, a big thanks goes to Grace Paraino, Dean of Marketing & Communications, and Lauren Kirkby, Events Coordinator, who ran the project and worked tirelessly to ensure it all came together.
