Meet Molly – The Zoo Keeper
Last year Year 9 students were invited to apply for a Work Experience opportunity at Taronga Zoo. We had many girls apply and Molly Baker was the successful applicant. Molly spent an entire week working with the zoo keepers and seeing the many and varied careers behind the scenes.
Last week I was lucky enough to spend 5 days at Taronga Zoo for work experience. I was placed in the Australian mammals division with a lovely group of zoo keepers. It gave me a great insight into what life is really like for a zoo keeper.
On the first day I got to feed and pat a tree kangaroo as well as feed three quokkas. We spent the rest of the day walking around the zoo doing some small jobs including moving a feather glider to its new enclosure and collecting tree branches. I spent the next day working in the emu, wallaby and kangaroo area. The main jobs I did that day were putting out food and water as well as spot cleaning. I also had the opportunity to hand feed a couple of wallabies that were hand raised. Throughout the rest of the week I did a variety of jobs and got to interact with many animals including a platypus, an echidna, koalas, squirrel gliders, feather gliders, bilbies and tawny frog mouths.
By Friday I had had such an amazing time that I didn’t want to leave. I definitely recommend the experience to anyone.
