Date: Thursday 1st December 2016
Venue: Refreshments in the Gonzaga Barry Undercroft, followed by the panel discussion in the Curran Theatre
Barbed Wire and Barricades: Peering Over the Fence Into the Truth of Children in Australian Detention
Pope Francis has declared this year the Holy Year of Mercy, as political tides turn and we are tempted to read and respond only to the media that amplifies our own sentiments, we must not forget about the call to mercy. This call asks us to look beyond politicised views, because to be merciful we must engage in the mess and chaos of seemingly intractable problems and respond with love and hope.
Looking beyond the 24 hour news cycle and politicians pontificating on points of law are stories, the stories of those who have risked their lives travelling across the seas in search of a new beginning. As a community we are gathering to listen to these stories in order to be reminded of all that we share rather than that which divides us.
Zana Fraillon is the author of The Bone Sparrow, a timely story of survival and bravery, one which reminds us all of the importance of freedom and hope, and the power of a story to speak for anyone who’s ever struggled to find a safe home.
Loreto Normanhurst has a long standing association with House of Welcome and the evening will comprise of a panel discussion which will include Zana as well as representatives from House of Welcome who will add their own real life stories to complement the fictional tales from the novel. The author will be signing copies of her book beforehand and The Children’s Bookshop have been invited to sell copies should you wish to purchase one on the evening.
