The Music students have had a number of performing opportunities this term and their commitment is very much appreciated.
In Week 1 some members of the Year 11 Music 1 class provided music for a special event in the Reception Room with the IBVM Sisters in attendance. The Luncheon was held to celebrate their legacy for the last 120 years and to look forward to the next 120 Years.
The music ensembles were also busy preparing for the Spring Fair (at the end of Week 2). The performances were very well received and showcased the breadth of talent at Loreto Normanhurst. The ensembles included the Brass Fanfare, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Chamber Strings, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Primary School Concert Band and the Primary School Strings. We also had a number of girls performing in solo and group items.
At the end of Week 3 some members of the Vocal Ensemble, with Dominica Leaver, Year 11, on the Cello, provided music for the Mass at Our Lady, Queen of Peace, Normanhurst. This is a regular commitment for the girls, occurring once a term.
On Monday 30 October both Year 9 Elective Music classes presented their Performance Night in the Curran Theatre. It was a very successful night with a wide variety of musical styles showcased. A special thank you to our accompanist, Ms Alice Hanna who provided accompaniments and support for the students.
The Choir and Vocal Ensemble prepared a program of music for their performance at the end of Week 4 for Relay for Life, a charity event raising money for people affected by cancer and their families. The girls presented an extensive program of songs with wonderful solo performances by Jayda Gursel, Year 10, Claire O’Connor, Year 11, and Alexandra Coulton, Year 9. The Choir is directed by one of our Vocal tutors, Miss Karen Bruce and was accompanied by Ms Alice Hanna.
The Chamber Strings were asked to provide music for the official reopening of the beautiful Reception Room tonight. They have prepared a varied program of music for this special event.
Congratulations to all students who have completed AMEB Examinations this term. We have had some excellent results. A special mention to Eileen Yang, Year 10 who successfully completed her A.Mus.A on the Piano. Eileen has completed all of her grades in music and now has an Associate Diploma. The Graduation Ceremony will be held at the beginning of next year. This is a wonderful achievement for someone so young.
We received some very exciting news after the HSC Performances that two of our Music students, Anna Mead and Millicent Somes were nominated for possible inclusion in the Encore Concert as they were considered as exemplary HSC Performances. Both girls had worked extremely hard preparing their performances and their programs were outstanding.
Meet the Music
The elective music students also attended their last Meet the Music concerts this term. Meet the Music 2 (attended by Years 10, 11 Music 2 and 12 Music 2) were treated to a very moving performance of Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto. Meet the Music 1 (attended by Years 9, 11 Music 1 and 12 Music 1) were thrilled to see the singer Katie Noonan with her supporting band and the artist Michael Leunig who was drawing while the music was being performed.
