Year 10 Assessments and Illness and Misadventure Procedure

In the past few weeks the Year 10 students have started many of their assessment tasks for the term.  We encourage the students to be organised, relaxed and focussed for these tasks.  If your daughter is away on the day of a task, or the day before a task, it is her responsibility to fill in the online Illness and misadventure form and then bring the appropriate documentation to the Learning Office.  In most cases this is doctor’s certificate.  This process has been explained to the girls during Conversation periods and they have been given a copy of the Year 10 2016 Learning Handbook which outlines in more detail the requirements.

Dr Estelle Lazer’s History Lecture

On the afternoon of Monday 29    February, over 80 History students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 were lucky enough to attend a lecture by archaeologist, Dr Estelle Lazer to learn about her experience working as an archaeologist in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Dr Lazer is a world-renowned in her field and works mainly on the ruins and skeletal remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This was particularly exciting for us Year 12s, as we had just been studying her in class as part of our HSC Ancient History topic on Pompeii and Herculaneum. Here she was in the flesh! To say the least, the experience was absolutely incredible and was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Being able to hear Dr Lazer speak about something that she was so passionate about, inspired many of us students and provided us with a deeper understanding of Pompeii and Herculaneum. During the lecture, we gained an insight into the development of archaeological methods of study, and the exciting new X-Ray and CT Scan technology that has helped reveal new things about what is inside those plaster casts from Pompeii that were cast by archaeologists so many years ago. Dr Lazer shared so many personal studies of the remains of the victims of the 79AD eruption, specifically showing us pictures of teeth and jaw bone remains, which provided us with valuable insights into things such as causes of death, as well as what people ate in these ancient Italian cities!. Possibly the greatest gift of all was the preview Dr Lazer gave us of unpublished, never been seen research that we could use and directly quote from in our HSC exams! We were all truly privileged to have been provided with this incredibly beneficial and enjoyable opportunity. Dr Lazer is a truly inspiring woman because of her dedication to her profession as well as her obvious deep passion for archaeology. This lecture was a wonderful experience for all who came.

Year 8 Science Long Reef Excursion, performing ecology fieldwork at Long Reef Rock platform

Student Reflections:

“I really enjoyed the excursion that Year 8 went on yesterday. We got to experience looking at wildlife that live in the rock pools of Long Reef Rock Platform. We saw a sea urchin and was able to touch it! There were also some added experiences such as seeing magnificent views of the water and the coastal beaches.“

Audrey, Year 8

“On Thursday, we went on an excursion to Collaroy to visit Long Reef. We learnt about how to find rock pools, different parts of the tide and what animals are found in those areas. Overall, it was a great day and we were all very tired on the way back!”

Emma, Year 8
