Board of Studies Disability Examination Provisions for the Higher School Certificate Examinations

The NSW Board of Studies provides for disability examination provisions to be granted to students who have demonstrated special examination needs, in the Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations. These needs may be related to learning, sensory impairment, mental health, medical or physical conditions.

Examples of provisions available include:

  • Braille or large print papers;
  • use of a writer and/or reader;
  • use of an oral interpreter;
  • extension of test time;
  • rest breaks;
  • separate examination supervision; and
  • permission to take medication.

For more information visit the Board of Studies website at www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au  and click on the ‘Disability Exam Provisions’ tab.

Individual schools are responsible for determining and approving  disability provisions for all school-based assessment tasks. The Board of Studies  determines Disability provisions for the HSC examinations only. Students and parents should be advised that there is no guarantee that the Board will grant the same provisions as those  provided at school.

If you feel your daughter may require Exam provisions please contact Mrs  Zoe Rhone (Hudson),  Head of Learning Enrichment, Ph: 02  9473 7368 to discuss the process of application. The closing date for disability provisions applications for known/stable conditions for the 2017 HSC is Friday 7 April.

 Illness and Misadventure Explained – Years 10, 11, and 12

 Illness/Misadventure applies:

  • If a student is absent on the day of an assessment task
  • If a student is absent on the day before an assessment task
  • If a student is late with the submission of an assessment task

The process to be followed by students is outlined in the relevant assessment handbook and is as follows:

  1. See the Deans of Learning as soon as possible with relevant documentation (doctor’s certificate or other) to explain your failure to complete the task.
  2. Arrange a suitable time to make up the task with your subject teacher. Students should expect to attempt the task the day they return to school.
  3. If you are ill for an examination during an exam block, ring the Learning Office who will inform the relevant teacher on your behalf and will arrange make-up times. See the Deans of Learning on the day you return to school, with your doctor’s certificate or other documentation.

All relevant documentation for Illness/Misadventure including the online Illness/Misadventure form must be submitted to the Deans of Learning within seven calendar days for the Illness/Misadventure request to be considered.

Students in Years 10-12 have been reminded to read the Years 10-12 Assessment Task FAQ’s   .

If you have any questions regarding Illness and Misadventure as it relates to assessments please contact the  Learning Office.
