Head of House – Maye

At the beginning of this year, I was delighted to take over temporarily from Mrs Elsa Vink as Acting Head of Maye House for 2016. We began with great joy, welcoming our new students and building community along the way. The Year 7 and 12 Trivia night was fantastic fun allowing our buddies to become better acquainted as Heroes and Villains and the Year 7s had great fun bonding on Camp. Of course the major event for Term 1 was Music Festival, where the House truly united in preparing our song “The Climb”. Led by our conductor Jemma Campbell, accompanist Yasmine Barraket, Music Leader Brigette Berkery and House Captain Penny Ryan, it was wonderful to see the teamwork and to hear the beautiful harmonies rising from the Deidre Rofe Centre each week. Towards the end of term, many of our families attended Holistic Plenaries with the Tutors which is always a valuable exercise for the students in learning and reflection.

Term 2 was a busy one as the Year 11s guided us through Loreto Day preparations and started to move into the Leadership process. We also explored the theme of “Being Brave” during House Time, working on the idea of being “upstanders” rather than bystanders in difficult situations. The Year 8 students attended their Camp, enjoying the time for discovery, fun and great team-building activities.

Third term is always filled with emotion, anticipation and reflection. We began with a very wet Athletics Carnival which did nothing to dampen the spirits of our “101 Dal-Maye-Tion” themed girls and it was fantastic to some rising talents on the track and field. Maye Year 7 Georgia Arcus was named the 12 years Age Champion which was a superb result. In the past few weeks our year 9s travelled to Far North Queensland and clearly had a truly amazing time; regaling us all with stories and experiences on their return. Year 12 have also just returned from their trials and are working closely with their teachers to prepare for the challenges ahead. Year 11 will be concluding their Preliminary courses in the next couple of weeks and looking forward to some time out on Retreat. Year 10 were extremely excited to attend their Dinner Dance and the Tutor Groups truly enjoyed seeing the photos the following week.

As this term comes to a close, we are preparing to farewell our Maye girls from the class of 2016 with joy, tears and great memories and are beginning to hand over leadership of the House. Penny Ryan has been an inspirational Captain for 2015-2016 and was delighted to learn the news that she will hand over to Elizabeth Anderson for next year. She is joined by the following members of Year 11 as our new House Council.
