Head of English

Welcome to English at Loreto Normanhurst, my name is Belinda White, as the new Head of English I look forward to fostering a dynamic journey of learning for our students. It is such a pleasure to be accepted into the dynamic and supportive Loreto Community and an English Faculty with such experience and history of achievement. We also warmly welcome to our English faculty this year, Rosanne Timmins and Jessica Willis.

This term in English we are focusing on building students’ love and exposure to literature and fostering our relationship with the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). This term in conjunction with Ms Liz Green, working in the newly created role of Knowledge and Learning Strategist, we have launched some new initiatives to engage students’ love in reading and writing literature. The Premier’s Reading Challenge has received an unprecedented interest in the 7-9 year groups and 80 students have now signed up to ‘Write a Book in a Day’. In the senior years displays and resources have been created to supplement our programs and core texts. Year 11 Advanced English are currently studying Modernism and have been visiting the LRC in order to further their understanding of the historical period. Students were invited to immerse themselves in a scene reminiscent of Virginia Woolf by sitting next to an old Corona typewriter while flicking through the pages of Modernist novels and resources. The HSC Advanced study of Yeats ‘Easter 1916’ has also been complimented with historical displays in the LRC to commemorate the centenary of the Uprising.

I strongly believe that reading is intrinsic to the development of both critical and imaginative thinkers and promotes a lifelong love of literature.
